Ellis County Warrant Searches
No single Ellis County search covers district, county-law, JP, and municipal warrants at once. The sheriff's Warrants Division page posts no lookup box, only a phone route. The County Clerk links to an LGS public-record portal, though it publishes no live warrant fields. City portals search city citations only. Begin with the court on your notice, then use the channel that holds that kind of case.
- Match the record to District Court, County Court at Law, JP, or city Municipal Court.
- Gather the name, birth date, and case or citation number shown on the paper.
- Call the clerk or court and ask what public lookup or counter handles that record.
- Use the sheriff's Warrants Division for its service scope; its page lists 972-825-4901.
- Ask the issuing court to confirm the current process and any next step.
Start With the Court on the Citation
The ticket itself names the controlling court, so read it first. A city citation belongs to that city's municipal court. A fine-only county citation goes to the JP precinct named on the paper. Class A or B misdemeanors run through County Court at Law 2 or 3, with the County Clerk's criminal division keeping the file. Felonies start in the assigned District Court, where the District Clerk is the record keeper. Lost the ticket? Give the clerk your name, date of birth, and any rough case date, and ask which Ellis County court owns it before you try another portal. A general web search can land you on a payment page that covers just one city, so check the court name and the official domain before you rely on it.
What a Warrant Search Asks For
The sheriff's official warrant page offers no public search fields at all. Waxahachie and Red Oak each run a Tyler citation search with several ways to pull up a city case. Neither portal states which fields are required, so try what you have and call the court if the screen rejects it.
| Channel | Fields or Contact | What It Covers |
|---|---|---|
| Sheriff Warrants Division | No online name field; phone 972-825-4901 | Unit contact, not a public database. |
| Waxahachie Tyler portal | Citation + DOB; DL + state; plate + state; first/last + DOB; SSN + DOB; business name | City citation and payment lookup. |
| Red Oak Tyler portal | Citation; DL + state; plate + state; name + DOB; SSN + DOB; business name | Red Oak citation and payment lookup. |
| JP or municipal clerk | Phone or case paper; ask the issuing court | Local court record and current instruction. |
Never send a Social Security number unless the official city portal requires it and the court confirms the route. A city portal is not an Ellis County active-warrant list.
The Sheriff's Warrant Line Is Not a Database
The Ellis County Sheriff's Warrants Division works warrants issued on written order of the District and County Courts, attempts some warrants for outside agencies, and runs on two deputies. Its page shows no search box, no result rows, no status filter, and no update schedule. The main number listed there is 972-825-4901. A county release from 2011 printed 972-825-4938, so trust the current sheriff page over that old number. The site's generic search box scans agency text, not a person's warrant status. The jail-information line and the 24-hour dispatch are separate functions too. For a record question in Ellis County, call the named warrant contact; save dispatch for emergencies, not for a clerk lookup.
Ellis County Warrant Search Results
Ellis County publishes no sample warrant result to model. When a record does surface, it may carry an identifier, the issuing court, warrant type, offense or reason, issue date, service or return date, bond or balance, and current status. Some fields stay in the court file rather than online. The county verifies no countywide warrant-number format, so don't assume one.
| Identifier | Cause, citation, warrant, or service number; format varies by system. |
|---|---|
| Court and type | District, County Court at Law, JP precinct, or city court; arrest, FTA, alias, or capias label. |
| Dates and status | Issue, execution, return, recall, or “as of” date; ask how the court defines each status. |
| Bond or amount | May be listed, set later, or held by the court; confirm before relying on a portal. |
A citation hit is not proof a warrant still stands. A payment receipt is not final clearance until the issuing court or dispatch confirms the update.
Waxahachie and Red Oak Search City Citations
The Waxahachie portal and Red Oak portal offer the same search families: citation number with date of birth, driver's license with state, plate with state, first and last name with birth date, Social Security number with birth date, or a business name. Both pages also show sign-in controls and weekday office-hour notices. Each result stays inside that city's court system, even though both cities sit in Ellis County. The screens support citation lookup and payment, but neither claims to be an active-warrant roster. Call the court or marshal to learn what a result means, whether an amount is due, and whether you must appear.
Ellis County Warrants: Who Holds What
The District Clerk keeps district-court records, felony proceedings included. The County Clerk's criminal division handles paperwork for the county courts at law. Four JPs run their own fine-only and traffic channels, while municipal courts hold city citations and warrants. The Ellis County Sheriff serves some court orders, but the issuing court alone controls the case and any recall. The county's court directory ties these levels together. For JP traffic, the official county instruction gives 972-825-5030 as an example contact and asks callers to have a license number or birth date handy. Match that number to the named court; it is no countywide warrant hotline.
DPS Can Show a Hold, Not a Warrant
Texas DPS runs a Failure to Appear/Failure to Pay program with OmniBase. It can show whether a court-reported violation is blocking your license renewal, but it is not a complete warrant search. DPS directs people back to the issuing court for the citation, balance, appearance, or compliance report. OmniBase's phone route is 800-686-0570.
A DPS or OmniBase result answers a license-compliance question. Confirm a warrant, bond, or recall with the court that issued the process.
Once a court reports compliance, the license record can take several business days to update. Keep your proof of payment, and ask the court when it sent the report.
Which Warrants Stay Restricted
Not every Ellis County warrant record opens up on request. Texas CCP Art. 15.26 makes an executed arrest warrant and its supporting affidavit public, subject to other laws. An unexecuted or sealed matter may not follow that route. Family Code §58.010 shields a child's arrest warrant and affidavit, and investigative exceptions, redactions, or a court order can also limit release.
Access rules:
CCP Art. 15.26 covers public access after execution.
Family Code §58.010 addresses confidential juvenile warrant material.
Texas Public Information Act provides the general government-record request framework.
Request a Non-Online Ellis County Record
The sheriff requires a written request. Send a narrow description to openrecords@elliscounty.texas.gov, by mail or in person at 300 S. Jackson Street, or by fax to 972-825-4941. The request should identify the court, case or citation number if known, record type, and date range. A request form is optional; the DA reviews gathered records before release.
The official Open Records page says a per-page fee may apply and the District Attorney will send written notice if the records cannot be produced within ten working days. The form is a request route, not a live status search.
The sheriff's Open Records page shows the current written-request instructions.

Follow whatever submission details the Ellis County clerk's office currently posts, and skip the sheriff's public-information officer for records requests.
